Less typing. More time for your patients. There are two ways to work with Freed and Athenahealth, depending on where you prefer to spend your day.
Freed Extension: bring Freed into Athenahealth
The Freed browser extension works alongside your usual Athenahealth workflow. Open a patient's chart and use Freed next to it to capture the visit, review your note, and send it back to Athenahealth.
Freed reads the patient from the chart you already have open, so you don't retype their details. When your note is ready, EHR Push writes it into that chart's fields. Both work through your existing Athenahealth session, and Freed's access is limited to the chart open in your browser — it does not search Athenahealth or pull the rest of the chart.
A good fit if: you prefer to stay in Athenahealth as you work through each patient's chart.
The Athena connection: bring Athenahealth into Freed
Connect your Athenahealth account to Freed and your Athena appointments appear in your Freed schedule. Select a patient from your day and start the visit without retyping their details.
Use Freed's full-size workspace to review and edit your note, with the Freed features included in your plan. When your note is ready, send it back to Athenahealth without opening the patient's chart in another tab. Finish documentation in Freed when it fits your day.
You'll find this at Settings → Connections → Athena. Setup happens once per practice — it involves Athena's own approval — and then each clinician links their Athena provider. See Set up the Athena connection.
A good fit if: you prefer to manage your notes in Freed while keeping them connected to Athenahealth.

EHR Push: a feature in both options
EHR Push sends your reviewed note and supported diagnoses from Freed into Athenahealth, including Athenahealth's structured diagnosis fields, without copying and pasting.
Use EHR Push through the Freed Extension while the patient chart is open, or from the Freed web app once athenahealth is connected.
Either way, the note lands in the same Athenahealth fields and you stay responsible for the accuracy of the chart. For exactly which Freed section goes where, how matched diagnoses are handled, and how to change where content lands, see EHR push for Athenahealth and EHR Push preferences: choose where your note lands.
What both give you
Select your patient and get started. Neither workflow requires you to retype patient details into Freed.
Use Freed's time-saving features. Access AI chat, Clinical Evidence, and patient context in either experience.
Which one do I have?
Freed Extension is available to everyone — just install it. EHR Push through the extension is included at no extra cost on a Premier or Groups plan; on the Core/Starter plan you get 5 chart transfers total (lifetime, not per month), after which you'll need to upgrade to keep using it. See EHR Push for the full picture.
The Athena connection is being rolled out to selected practices and isn't available to every account yet. It isn't tied to a specific plan — your practice needs an active Freed subscription and has to be enabled by Freed. If you open Settings → Connections and see "Athena is not enabled for your account," it hasn't reached your practice yet. Contact Clinician Support if you'd like to be considered.
You don't have to pick just one. If your practice has the Athena connection, you can still use the Freed Extension whenever you'd rather work directly in a chart.
