EHR Push preferences: choose where your note lands

Set how Freed inserts notes into EHR fields with existing content.

Available for: Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks (eCW), and WellSky push, using the Freed Chrome extension.

When Freed pushes your note into an EHR field that already has text in it, you can control whether Freed's content is added after or before what's already there. This is set with the EHR Push preferences in your Freed settings.

Where to find it

Before you start: your EHR must be selected in Settings → Profile. If it is not, the EHR push preferences section shows “Select your EHR in Profile to personalize your push preferences” and no options appear. If your EHR is set and you instead see “There are no customizable push preferences for…”, that EHR does not have push preferences yet.

  1. Open Settings in Freed.

  2. Go to Preferences (under Personal).

  3. Scroll to EHR push preferences near the bottom of the page.

Existing EHR content: Above or Below

Under “Existing EHR content,” choose how Freed adds new text relative to content already in the EHR field:

  • Below existing content (default) — Freed adds its content after the text already in the field.

  • Above existing content — Freed adds its content before the text already in the field.

Either way, Freed adds to your existing text rather than overwriting it — your previously entered content is preserved.

How to set your preference

  1. Go to Settings → Preferences → EHR push preferences.

  2. Under Existing EHR content, select Below existing content or Above existing content.

  3. Click Save changes. You will see Saved next to the button once it is stored, and your choice applies to your next push. If you leave the page without clicking Save changes, your selection is discarded.

In eCW, users can choose whether A&P content goes into Treatment Notes vs Internal Clinical Notes.

eCW: Choose which HPI category your note goes to

Rolling out. This is a newer, separate eCW-only option — it controls which eCW HPI category your note's HPI content is routed to, instead of eCW's single generic HPI field. It's independent of the Treatment Notes / Internal Clinical Notes setting above.

This option only appears — and only populates with your eCW's categories — when you open EHR Push preferences from inside the Freed Chrome extension on an active eCW tab. Freed reads the live list of HPI categories from your open eCW chart. Opening EHR Push preferences from Settings in the Freed web app (outside the extension) will show this field, but the category list will be empty, since there's no live eCW page for Freed to read from.

  1. On an active eCW patient chart, open the Freed Chrome extension and start (or review) your Push to EHR flow.

  2. In the EHR Push preferences shown there, use Choose where Freed writes your HPI to search for and select one of your eCW HPI categories.

  3. Save your selection. Freed will route your HPI content to that category on this and future pushes, instead of eCW's single generic HPI field.

In Athena, Assessment & Plan lets you choose Split by diagnosis (the default — preserves diagnosis-card mapping) or One summary (writes the full plan into the summary field). The Patient Instructions switch controls whether Freed pushes patient instructions to Athena; it is on by default.

Good to know

  • Keep your Freed extension up to date. These preferences are applied by the newer direct-connection push, which needs Freed extension 3.8.106 or later. On an older extension the setting can still appear and save, but your pushes will use the default placement. If your notes are not landing where you chose, update the Freed extension, reopen Freed, and push again.

  • This preference applies to Athena, eCW, and WellSky push. Other EHRs aren't affected.
