Structured Templates: Custom Subsections

Updated this week

Custom Subsections let you design AI-generated content in Freed’s Structured Templates using your own prompts. While powerful, this feature requires careful formatting and experimentation.

Before You Begin

For most needs, use the simpler tools available in the Template Builder:

  • Pre-Made Subsections: Specialty-specific options created by Freed.

  • Fixed Text: Static text blocks for consistent output (e.g., consent language).

We recommend starting with these options.

Use Custom Subsections only when you need more flexibility or specificity.

Adding a Custom Subsection

  1. In the Template Builder, navigate to the section you want to customize.

  2. Click “New Subsection”, then choose “Custom Subsection”

  3. Design your Custom Subsection following the design parameters and formatting.

  4. Click Save.

Custom Subsection Components

Each Custom Subsection can include three types of AI prompts:

  • Content Placeholder
Use square brackets [] for placeholders, and Freed will try to add the content specified.
Example: [Mention any allergies the patient has]

  • Instruction
Use parentheses for instructions to specify how information that is or isn't mentioned should be handled.
Example: (Only include this if it is explicitly mentioned in the transcript)

  • Verbatim Text
Use quotation marks for text you want to appear as written.

    Example: “Appropriate mood and affect.”

Support Policy: When Freed Can Help

Freed provides support for technical issues, but not for prompt optimization.

Technical Issues (Supported)

We’ll assist if:

  • Your prompt is returned as-is in the note

  • There are formatting errors (e.g., missing brackets, improper syntax)

Prompt Optimization (Not Supported)

We do not support:

  • Improving or refining the prompt’s output

  • Ensuring consistency or tone in the AI response

Prompt design inherently involves trial and error. Even Freed’s internal teams spend significant time iterating to achieve reliable, high-quality results. Custom Subsections offer powerful flexibility, but that comes with reduced predictability.

We understand how crucial consistent output is. Crafting effective prompts takes time, experimentation, and technical skill. We encourage you to use Custom Subsections if you're comfortable engaging with this advanced feature and have the bandwidth to refine your approach through testing.

Summary

Custom Subsections allow you to tailor AI output, but they require careful design and independent refinement.

  • Use Pre-Made or Fixed Text subsections when possible

  • Turn to Custom Subsections for advanced needs

  • Freed supports technical issues, but not prompt optimization
