Advanced Coding Tool

Improve coding consistency, uncover revenue opportunities, and reduce compliance risk across your organization

Advanced Coding Tools are available to organizations on the Groups plan and include two powerful features:

  • Coding Dashboard

  • Coding Policies

These tools help administrators improve coding consistency, identify missed revenue opportunities, and reduce compliance risk across their organization.

Why Advanced Coding Tools?

Many clinics leave significant revenue uncollected due to missed or inconsistent coding practices. While providers make coding decisions every day, administrators often have limited visibility into coding behavior across their organization.

Common challenges include:

  • Limited insight into how providers are using coding suggestions

  • Difficulty identifying undercoding patterns or billing variation

  • No centralized way to standardize coding guidance across the organization

  • Increased compliance and audit risk from unnoticed overcoding

Real-World Impact

In one case study, Burlington Pediatrics identified approximately $140,000 in annual revenue opportunities from previously missed PHQ-9 screening codes alone.

Additionally, an estimated 20–25% of visits may contain split-billing opportunities that often go uncaptured.

Accessing Advanced Coding Tools

Administrators on Groups plans can access Advanced Coding Tools by navigating to:

Settings → Coding

The Coding page contains two tabs: Coding Dashboard and Coding Policies.

Turn on sharing to use Coding

The coding dashboard needs Care Collaboration sharing turned on to show coding data across your organization's providers. Turn on sharing in Group settings.

Coding Dashboard

The Coding Dashboard provides organization-wide visibility into coding adoption and coding patterns across your clinic.

Insights can be filtered by:

  • Reporting period

  • Specialty

Engagement

The Engagement section shows how providers interact with coding suggestions generated in Freed, including:

  • Code views

  • Code copies

  • Code-copy activity trends

This helps administrators understand overall adoption and engagement with coding recommendations.

Provider Breakdown

The Provider Breakdown allows administrators to view coding behavior at the individual provider level.

Use this section to:

  • Identify variation across providers

  • Spot potential undercoding trends

  • Understand adoption patterns within the organization

Code Distribution

The Code Distribution section provides a breakdown of:

  • E/M codes

  • CPT codes

  • ICD codes

This view helps organizations understand how coding is distributed across providers and specialties.

E/M Distribution Benchmarks

E/M distribution is often one of the clearest indicators of coding variation or potential undercoding.

When available, Freed displays relevant CMS specialty benchmarks alongside your organization's data to provide additional context.

Generated vs. Copied Codes

Dashboard insights can be viewed using either:

  • Generated Codes (default)

  • Copied Codes

This allows administrators to compare suggested coding patterns with the codes providers actively use.

Coding Policies

Coding Policies allow organizations to standardize how coding suggestions are generated across the clinic.

Policies are intentionally flexible and can be used to:

  • Prioritize specific codes

  • Define preferred coding sequences

  • Reinforce internal documentation standards

  • Incorporate specialty-specific billing guidance

  • Align coding suggestions with organizational workflows

Policy Examples

To help teams get started, Freed includes a library of example policies covering common coding scenarios and best practices.

Test Policies Before Publishing

Policies can be tested directly within the note view before they are applied organization-wide.

This allows administrators to:

  • Back-test policies against existing notes

  • Evaluate how changes affect coding recommendations

  • Refine guidance before rolling it out to providers

By combining visibility through the Coding Dashboard with standardization through Coding Policies, organizations can improve coding consistency, uncover missed revenue opportunities, and reduce compliance risk across their practice.
