Freed Coding Assistant

Learn how Freed helps you capture every dollar you've earned

What is the Coding Assistant?

The Coding Assistant helps clinicians and clinics capture revenue they've already earned but might otherwise miss. By surfacing accurate, evidence-linked coding opportunities, the Coding Assistant improves code precision, supports stronger documentation, and reduces claim denials.

The Coding Assistant is included at no additional cost for Premier and Group tier subscribers.

Key benefits:

  • Capture more revenue through precise coding.

  • Spend less time coding, and close out visits faster.

  • Reduce claim denials and audits with more complete documentation.

  • Get visibility into clinic-wide coding performance and opportunities.

Before You Start: AMA Opt-In

The Coding Assistant uses AMA-licensed CPT code data. Before accessing coding features, you'll be asked to complete a one-time opt-in that requires your clinician name and practice address. This is an AMA compliance requirement and takes less than a minute.

How It Works

1. Post-Visit Coding Optimizations

After your visit ends, Freed analyzes the encounter and surfaces suggested CPT, ICD-10, and E/M codes along with opportunities to improve coding accuracy and specificity. The Coding Assistant supports outpatient office visits β€” both new and established patient encounters β€” and works across specialties. Codes appear in the Billing codes tab of your note, approximately 10–20 seconds after the note finishes generating.

Note: CPT codes are informational only. The clinician is ultimately responsible for final coding decisions.

What you'll see:

  • Suggested ICD-10, CPT, and E/M codes supported by your documentation.

  • An outpatient E/M code, with the option to toggle between MDM-based and time-based selection.

  • Rationale explaining why the E/M level was selected, with expandable details on which documentation criteria were met.

  • Evidence snippets pulled directly from your transcript or note.

  • Additional CPT codes identifiable from your visit, including add-on codes and CPT modifiers.

  • Opportunities to resolve diagnosis ambiguity (e.g., laterality, acute vs chronic).

  • Opportunities to clarify the appropriate level of care.

  • Copy and paste-ready codes for quick transfer into your EHR or billing system.

How to act on coding opportunities:

  • Review the initial suggested codes supported by your note.

  • Review opportunities surfaced by the Coding Assistant and clarify your codes.

  • Accept a suggestion and Freed will update the code and supporting note.

2. Coding Dashboard (for group admins)

Administrators can view coding performance across the clinic in the Coding Dashboard. Navigate to the dashboard to access clinic-wide insights (admin accounts only).

Dashboard features:

  • Clinic-level view of coding across all clinicians.

  • Custom rules to guide coding suggestions for your clinic.

  • Filter by provider, specialty, E/M level, diagnosis category, or date range.

  • E/M distribution for all clinicians in your clinic.

  • Identify clinicians who may benefit from targeted coaching.

Availability

The Coding Assistant is available on the Premier and Group tiers at no additional cost, on Web and Mobile Web.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the Coding Assistant change my note without my approval?

A: No. All suggestions are optional. Freed will only update your note when you explicitly accept a suggestion.

Q: How does Freed determine which codes to suggest?

A: Freed analyzes your transcript and documentation against clinical guidelines and coding rules to surface the most appropriate codes. Every suggestion includes linked evidence from your note.

Q: Where can I find total visit duration?

A: You can find the duration of your visit's recording at the top of your patient record, just under the patient name field. See the screenshot below.

Q: Can I turn off live suggestions during visits?

A: Yes. You can disable live suggestions by snoozing them for individual visits.

Q: Can I add in additional codes myself?
A: Yes, in the Billing codes tab, you can add additional ICD-10 and CPT codes

Q: What happened to "Coding Pro"?

A: Coding Pro has been renamed to the Coding Assistant. The features are the same β€” the name has changed to better reflect how it works alongside your clinical workflow. Additionally, it is now included at no extra cost for Premier and Group subscribers.

Q: What happened to the standalone "CPT Codes" feature?

A: CPT codes are now part of the Coding Assistant. The same CPT and E/M code generation you're used to is described above under "Post-Visit Coding Optimizations," with additional capabilities like ICD-10 suggestions.
