Freed offers two types of note templates to help you create documentation that fits your workflow: Structured Templates and Learned Templates. Understanding the differences between these two options will help you choose the best approach for your clinical documentation needs.
How to Use Structured or Learned Templates
You can select a Template at the beginning of a visit, before clicking Capture Conversation. The initial note will be processed using that Template. Additionally, you can switch an already processed note into a different Template, and Freed will regenerate the entire SOAP note using the new Template.
Once you've selected your desired Template for that visit, you can select Capture Conversation as usual.
Structured Templates
Structured Templates are built using the Template Builder, allowing you to manually configure subsections and customize their style and format.
Customizing an Existing Structured Template
Open a processed note.
In the top menu bar, select the Template dropdown.
If you've already selected the Template you wish to alter, just select Customize.
Find the Template you want to edit and click "Customize" next to it.
Note: To customize Structured Templates, you must use the Customize option to access the Template Builder. This is why the Learn Format button does not appear on notes generated with Structured Templates.
Using the Template Builder
Within the Template Builder, you have several customization options:
Configure Style & Length:
Expand each subsection by clicking the caret on the right to adjust the styling and length.
Edit or Hide Subsection Headings:
Show or hide its heading entirely by clicking the “eye” icon.
Rearrange Subsections:
Drag and drop subsections to reorder them.
Add New Subsections:
Click “New Subsection” located at the bottom of each section to add a new pre-defined subsection.
Add a Free Text subsection to have custom verbatim text show up in your notes.
Add a Custom Subsection to write your own prompts.
Creating a New Structured Template from Scratch
Open the Template Selector (before starting a new note or when viewing a processed note).
Click "Create New Template" at the bottom of the Template Selector.
Define your desired subsections, formatting, and structure.
Label and save your new Structured Template for future use.
Learned Templates
Learned Templates are created using the Learn Format feature, allowing Freed to replicate the formatting of a saved example note with just one click.
Key Features of Learned Templates:
One-Click Learning:
Freed analyzes a saved example note and replicates its structure and formatting in future notes.
Minimal Manual Setup:
No need to manually configure subsections or formatting.
Nuanced Formatting:
Delivers more than just bullets vs. paragraphs—preserves detailed formatting choices.
How to Customize Learned Templates
There are currently only two preset options for Learned Templates:
New Patient
Returning Patient
You cannot create new Learned Templates. If you need a new template, consider creating a Structured Template instead.
To Adjust the Existing Learned Templates:
Open a note that was processed using either the New Patient or Returning Patient template.
Directly edit the text in the note to reflect your preferred formatting.
Click the "Learn Format" button to save these adjustments for future notes.
To Modify Learned Templates Later:
Review the Learned Examples by selecting the arrow next to Learn Format.
Delete any Learned Examples that no longer match your formatting preferences.
Summary
Both Structured Templates and Learned Templates offer powerful ways to customize your clinical notes:
Use Structured Templates for precise control over formatting and section organization.
Use Learned Templates when you want Freed to replicate an existing format with minimal effort.
Choose the option that best suits your workflow for seamless and efficient documentation.
