Customize your Notes with Templates

Learn how to use Freed's template features to make your notes your own

Freed offers an AI-powered template feature to make your notes sound like you. Templates in Freed allow you to customize how your notes are generated. There are two ways to teach a template from your edits: click the Learn format button at the top of any visit page after editing the note (default), or enable Auto Learn in your template settings to have edits captured automatically in the background (off by default β€” we highly recommend turning it on). You can also edit templates directly in the Template Library.

Select a Template for your Note

Freed provides pre-made templates based on the medical specialty you choose when signing up. The default templates will automatically be added to your library so you can start using them immediately.

Template Types

If you've been using Freed for a while, you may see two different types of templates: Learned Templates and Structured Templates.

  • Learned templates, indicated by a purple icon, use AI to learn from your edits and style. Think of this option as "learn by doing" β€” edit a note to your liking, then click Learn format at the top of the visit to teach the template (or enable Auto Learn in your template settings to have updates happen automatically in the background β€” highly recommended).

  • Structured templates, indicated by a blue icon, generate notes based on a fixed structure that you define. Think of this option as an "outline" that Freed follows to create a note -- this feature provides a more fixed solution, better suited for group settings where consistent notes among multiple providers is preferred.

Please note that Structured Templates are being sunset, and are not available for new accounts. If you have an existing Structured Template, you can still use it. However, we encourage you to try using Learned Templates for greater customization and personalization.

Use a Template

You can select a template before a visit so that your note generates in your preferred format, or after if you'd like to decide on a template later:

Option 1: Select a template before capturing your conversation

You can select a template at the beginning of a visit, before clicking Capture Conversation. The initial note will be processed using that Template.

Option 2: Change a template after your note is generated

Additionally, you can switch an already processed note into a different Template, and Freed will regenerate the entire SOAP note using the selected template.

Use the Template Library

You can view, edit, and manage all templates added to your account in the Template Library. Click the Templates icon in the left sidebar to view your Template Library.

You can also view and add other pre-made templates from Freed, as well as add any shared templates if using Freed as part of a group.

Where to find the Auto Learn toggle: From the left menu, click Templates, find your template and click on it. At the top of the template page, just under the title, you'll see the Auto Learn button β€” click it to toggle Auto Learn on or off. We highly recommend turning it on for the smoothest, hands-off experience.

Manage your Templates

Click the star icon to add a template to your favorites. This will bring the starred template to the top of your list when using the template selector in the recording or editing screen.

Click the ellipses (three dots) to open template actions to edit, duplicate, delete, or star/unstar the template.

Please note that Freed default templates that have been added to your account automatically cannot currently be deleted.

Edit your Templates

In the Template Library, click on a template to open its editor. If you're editing a Freed default template, you'll need to duplicate the template first before editing.

Clicking on a Learned Template will open its Example Note. This is the hypothetical note that Freed uses to format newly generated notes. You can edit the example note directly in the same way you can edit a note. You can:

  • Insert, remove, and re-order subsections within the SOAP note

  • Change punctuation, formatting, and units of measurement

  • Use numbered or bulleted lists

Add verbatim text

Enclose text in quotation marks to indicate that it should appear exactly as written.

Add custom instructions

Use square brackets to provide custom instructions.

e.g. [Avoid using direct quotes from the patient.]
